A Professional Photographer for 20 YearsHere's what Sue has to sayMy favourite contemporary artists are Stanley Spencer and Rowland Hilder, who are both English artists and probably not well known in America. I also enjoy works by far less known artists. My favourite artists from history would be Turner, Samuel Palmer, both Pieter Brueghels, Monet and William Blake. I think that I enjoy paintings that show a moment in time, or atmosphere of an era. Here at Painter Talk I like to see Cat's paintings as she is able to use Painter to produce varying styles. To see that it is possible does inspire me to greater efforts. I think that I learn from seeing all the paintings in the galleries as they are all so different and something new can always be seen. Although I gain inspiration from other people's work, I have never wanted to copy their way of painting. My favourite Painter brush has been John Derry's Tenth Street Touch for some time. I do not always use it, but if I have a problem I tend to reach for it. I like any brush with a drip function, and if it is possible to change a brush to a drip function it often becomes one! I am always looking for brushes that will give an interesting texture. I would like to use the impasto brushes as well, but find they do not give a realistic appearance for me. I am lucky that being retired I can please myself as to what and how I paint. I was a professional photographer for 20 years and relish being free from customers' requirements! My aim is to produce a perfect painting, which is the reason why everyone keeps painting. I should paint more freehand, but I do enjoy linking photography with painting. I do not feel that I have an established style as I am still experimenting with all that Painter has to offer. I think that there are many avenues to still explore. I would like to loosen up with my painting, but feel that I paint too realistically. I would like to paint more impressionistically with free, gestural strokes. I find Painter is addictive and I am enjoying the journey of exploration. Sue Stevens |
