AN INTERVIEW WITH KATHY

Tell us a bit about your art and your life

I have loved the arts since I was a child. I would have liked to have developed my skills more but real life had other plans for me. As my husband reached retirement, we could pare a lot of old commitments from our life. He and I both started photography at that time.

A few years later I found the digital painting world. There is rarely a day I am not working with it. I feel like a little kid that may now play on the playground all she wants! I am just as if not more thrilled to see others' talents! Every day is like going to an art show, museum or classes!

When did you first get interested in digital painting and do you have natural media painting experience? Are you also a photographer?

I got interested in digital painting in December of 2005. I did paint and draw in natural media most of my life on and off. I am mostly self- taught. I am also a photographer and again mostly self taught.

How is your art printed? What canvas or watercolor paper do you use for printing them?

I have not yet printed or have had printed any work I have done, with the exception of making single fold Christmas cards from my cheap little printer.

Do you do any hand embellishing to your finished pieces?

I usually do a little white frame with a drop shadow on my pieces.

How do you promote your work and do you sell any to the public?

I don’t do any of that.

Besides Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop, what other software or plug-ins do you use to create your art?

I use some plugins from Auto FX as well as KPT. Main program I use is Painter followed by Photoshop.

Where are you located and do you give workshops or classes?

I am located in South Carolina. I taught some adult courses in traditional media and am now doing online teaching at Karen Bonaker's new Digital Art Academy.

Tell us something about you and your life that you would like to share with others and that has affected your creating art.

I advise anyone starting this to be persistent, and believe they can do it! Most of all just love doing it!

What are the best sites you have found to help you learn Painter?

Painter Talk and classes by Karen Bonaker, Marilyn’s Digital Painting Forum and CDs/DVDs by members there and also Corel Painter Official Magazine.

What is your strongest motivation to paint and draw?

Learning and exploring the digital medium.

What artists do you admire most and why?

I admire so many artists. Everyone has a gift they bring to the work they do. I am inspired by Artists like Jeremy Sutton, Cat Bounds and Judy Misquitta. Now I feel bad for everyone I left out!

Awards

I won second prize in a February contest at Innographx last February in the still life category. I won third prize in a goddess painting contest at Painter Talk in July. I have been mentioned in the Corel Painter Official Magazine.
