HERE'S WHAT MARCIA HAD TO SAY Art and My LifeAs a young Mother I loved doing all sorts of arts and crafts. I did everything from sewing to knitting and crocheting to decoupage to stained glass. I taught sewing part time to support my fabric habit. During high school and collage I never took any art classes, but I always loved watercolors and wanted to paint with them. As my children grew up and demanded less of my time, I looked for a watercolor class, but alas, each one had a prerequisite of a drawing class. Finally I enrolled in a wonderful drawing class at a community college. I shall always remember the first thing the professor said, which was, “Anyone can learn to draw. It is just like learning to ride a bicycle”. We started out drawing with a twig and India ink. It was a good class, but soon life interfered again and it was years before I realized my watercolor dream. When my husband and I sailed away on our sailboat to cruise the Pacific, I took Betty Edwards’s book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain with me. I devoured the book, doing each and every exercise. Finally in New Zealand a friend presented me with a traveler’s watercolor kit, which I cherish to this day. I drew daily and dabbled with the watercolors. Upon our return to San Diego, eleven years later, I found many wonderful adult classes available. I took them all. The instructors were first class and I learned so much. I became consumed with painting and painted almost every day. Then came the advent of the personal computer! That was my next addiction. I learned and eventually I taught computer classes to senior citizens. This made a big dent in my painting time. I started, as many did, with Paint Shop Pro, and then moved on to Photoshop. I monitored the Digital Nuts group where we were interested in photo-editing to make artistic renderings of photographs. Somewhere along the way I became interested in digital photography, starting with a no pixel Sony Mavica camera and finally settling on Canon SLRs. My next big discovery was Painter. Taking Karen’s classes and loving to paint with Painter has been my favorite pastime for a while now. I enjoy painting from my photos. Marcia Fasy |
